Q: Isn’t this just about body language?
A: Certainly body language comes into it, but it is much more than that. There are over 100 skills having to do with visual, auditory and kinaesthetic techniques as well as breathing and group dynamics.
Q: If I learn these skills will it change me? Won’t I be like some kind of puppet?
A: At first you may well feel a little self-conscious when practising the skills and techniques. However, they are nothing new – charismatic leaders use them instinctively. Any self-consciousness will soon disappear when you discover that these simple skills really work.
Q: Who is Michael Grinder?
A: Michael Grinder is a master of, and world-renowned expert in, the science of non-verbal communication, non-verbal leadership, group dynamics, advanced relationship building skills and presentation skills. Michael Grinder is the pioneer in teaching others how to perceive non-verbal communication in a group setting. He has developed a unique, new science of non-verbal communication that is rich in practical skills that can transform:
· the way leaders connect with, inspire and motivate their teams
· the way they build their teams
· the way people deal with conflict
· the way we deliver presentations
· the way we deliver other than good information
· the way we maintain our relationships with people
· the way we communicate with everyone in our lives
Q: Do I have to use non-verbal intelligence all the time?
A: No, not at all. The skills and techniques are like a tool-kit that you can use when you need it. Most of the time, you can simply be yourself. If you find yourself in a situation when you are not getting the results you want, however, that’s when you can pull out the relevant skills to increase your effectiveness and influence relationships in a positive manner.
Q: How long will it take to learn these techniques?
A: Some of the skills are very simple and you can implement them immediately. Others take longer to refine. We always recommend that you practise just one skill at a time.
Q: What’s the best way to learn these techniques?
A: An easy and enjoyable way to start is by reading Michael Grinder’s book, Charisma: The Art of Relationships. This will give you an excellent overview of the subject in an entertaining yet informative way. To be able to exercise the skills for yourself and get consistent results, you really need to attend a workshop or take part in a tailored training programme.
Q: I want to learn all these skills as quickly as possible – how can I do that?
A: Why not consider one of Michael Grinder’s UK Masterclasses sponsored by NVI International.
Q: What is group dynamics?
A: A group exists whenever there are more than two people involved in an interaction. Non-verbal intelligence equips you with skills to understand how to be successful and effective in groups.
Q: What is ENVoY?
A: ENVoY is a training programme for teachers and classroom assistants. By using the influence of specific verbal and non-verbal strategies, teachers can achieve calmer classrooms where more autonomous learning takes place. To read more about ENVoY click here.
Q: I’m a teacher – how do I get onto an ENVoY training course?
A: When you sign up to the GLD Education newsletter you will be kept informed of ENVoY training course dates and locations. If there are none in your area, then contact your local Professional Development Centre or speak to your Head Teacher with a view to GLD providing a training programme.
Q: I am having trouble with my teenage children – can I use these skills at home?
A: Non-verbal intelligence skills are appropriate in any interaction where you wish to deal effectively with issues and at the same time preserve the relationship. An understanding of the Cats and Dogs analogy is particularly helpful to parents when dealing with their teenage children who are sometimes known as UFOs (Unidentifiable, Formerly Ours!!). You can find out more in Michael Grinder’s book, Charisma: The Art of Relationships.
