If you could have a toolkit of simple skills and strategies that would enable you to deal effectively with difficult people whilst maintaining the client relationship would you jump at the chance?
Of course, there’s actually no such thing as a difficult person. It’s just that there are some people whose behaviour or attitudes create problems and challenges for whatever reason. They could be employees, colleagues, customers, suppliers, or even your own children.
Issues vs relationships
Whatever the difficult situation, the bottom line is that you are not getting the desired results; or, if you are, you may consider that the relationship has been damaged in the process and this is bound to impact negatively in some way, now or in the future. All too often it makes it even harder to deal with the next issue that crops up and there may be a reduction in co-operation from the other party (or parties) involved. How do you give negative feedback or break bad news?
As a leader responsible for keeping every team member on board, whilst at the same time maintaining or increasing productivity, you will want to get the results you need while at the same time maintaining staff morale. However, your best efforts may be compromised by your having to deal with a difficult member of staff, maybe in a staff appraisal, or perhaps there is an unpopular issue or bad news that you have to break to the team or the Board. To manage the situation effectively, somehow you have to find a way to be hard on issues yet soft on relationships, for solutions always lie within the relationship.
